About Recreational Sports

VCU Recreational Sports is here to help you have fun and stay healthy. We offer intramural sports, fitness programs, outdoor adventure trips and special sporting events. If you're a VCU student, you're already a member!

Informal Recreation

Drop in for a workout with friends. Swim in one of our two pools or play pick up ball in the gyms. Check out our Friday Lineups for a fun end to the week.

Outdoor Adventure Program

The Outdoor Adventure Program serves VCU students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests by providing outdoor low-cost activity-based trips, including whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, canoeing, caving, hiking, backpacking and skiing.

Aquatics

Learn to swim, improve your stroke, or take water exercise classes. Challenge yourself in our Swim the James program. Train to become a certified lifeguard or swim instructor.

Sport Clubs

Compete against clubs from other colleges. Sport clubs are student-organized and -led. Current clubs include lacrosse, rugby, crew, basketball, whitewater, ultimate and more.

Facilities

VCU currently offers two full-service facilities—the Stuart C. Siegel Center on the Monroe Park Campus and the MCV Campus Recreation & Aquatic Center. Both offer full-service fitness centers, multipurpose rooms for group exercise classes and gymnasium space for basketball, volleyball and other activities. The MCV Campus center features racquetball courts, a 25-meter indoor swimming pool and a heated spa.

The Monroe Park Campus also offers the 25-yard indoor Franklin Street Pool on the street level of the Franklin Street Gym. Rec Sports members can also access open court times at the Thalhimer Tennis Center and the Mary Frances Youth Center. The Cary Street Field has scheduled open recreation hours, as well as scheduled times for intramural sports and sport club practices.

Membership

Students currently registered at VCU have full access to Rec Sports facilities at no additional fee. This includes students from both the MCV and Monroe Park campuses, full-time, part-time, graduate, undergraduate and special students. Non-fee-paying currently enrolled students may join at the faculty/staff rate and pay by the semester.

Memberships are available to VCU faculty, staff, alumni and select contract staff at very reasonable rates. Payroll deduction is available.

Student Employment

Recreational Sports employs more than 200 students in a wide variety of jobs. Some of the benefits of working for Recreational Sports include the convenience of an on-campus job, flexible scheduling, ongoing training and certifications. Working at Rec Sports is fun and a great way to get to know other people from around the university. Primary hiring times are April for the following summer and fall, and November for the following spring semester. More information and job application materials are available on the Web site.
