American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course

Date: November 6 - 8 & 13-15, 2009

Times: November 6 & 13: 5-8pm; Saturdays 9am-6pm; Sundays 1-6pm

This class teaches lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Classes are limited to ten students. You must meet the following prerequisites:

Swim 300 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:

100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick

100 yards of breaststroke

100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke

Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 – 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object, and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. The candidate must hold the object with both hands and must keep his or her face above the water.

Lifeguard/CPR for the Professional Rescuer Recertification Course

Date: November 14 and 15, 2009Time: Sat 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, Sun 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Cost: Lifeguard & CPR: VCU Student/Faculty/Staff: $40, Community: $60
         CPR ONLY: VCU Student/Faculty/Staff: $20, Community: $30

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and/or CPR for the Professional Rescuer recertification course, challenge format. Candidates for the re-certification challenge course must hold a current ARC Lifeguard Training and/or CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate. Individuals who do not possess a current certification may challenge the course once. If you do not pass the challenge course, you must take the full course. Candidates have sole responsibility for preparing for the knowledge and skill evaluations. Candidates must bring a breathing barrier device (pocket mask). If you are attending the CPR recertification only attend Saturday 9am-12pm.

Water Safety Instructor Course(offered Spring 2010)

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course trains instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress. Students must attend all scheduled class times.
