Rec Sports offers over 100 classes every semester. Classes vary in goal, intensity, and pace. All classes are free to VCU students and Recreational Sports members.

Personal Fitness Training is your opportunity to meet one-on-one with a certified fitness professional . Your Personal Fitness Trainer (PFT) will develop a fitness program specifically designed to meet your needs, goals, and interests. Additional individual and group sessions, Body Fat Composition Measurement, and Nutrition Consulting are also available for a fee.

BSDI Fitness Software
Fitness Analyst is a comprehensive fitness assessment, exercise programming, training, tracking and motivation software used by Recreational Sports Personal Fitness Trainers. This software keeps track of your medical, fitness, and exercise data, and can print out personalized progress reports. This service is open to clients with paid Personal Fitness Training sessions only.

VCU Recreational Sports welcomes students, faculty, staff, and other members to our Fitness Center Resource Bar at the Cary St. Gym. The Fitness Center Resource Bar offers services that promote healthy lifestyles, illness and disability prevention, restore and improve wellness of mind and body, and provide nutritional information. Resources include:

In addition, we provide opportunities for fitness/group exercise instructors and personal fitness trainers who want to stay current with information pertaining to their field of instruction and training. They also can branch out to related areas. Some sources are ACSM, AFAA, IDEA, AFPA, CSCS, NSCA, and ACE.

ACE Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer Exam Prep Courses

The ACE® Group Fitness Instructor Certification Exam prep courses are designed for those interested in working professionally as a Group Fitness Instructor or Personal Fitness Trainer. You will be given the foundation of knowledge and skills necessary to work with clients. You will learn effective communication, techniques and skills to teach safely and effectively. You will also increase your understanding of biomechanics, human anatomy, kinesiology, and exercise physiology.
These courses are taught by Dr. Eric West, Assistant Director for Fitness, VCU Recreational Sports. He is certified by ACE as a provider, in accordance with ACE's standards of excellence in higher learning, to offer training and certification programs to students preparing for successful careers in fields of health and fitness. They will prepare you to take the ACE Group Fitness Instructor and/or Personal Fitness Trainer Exams, offered at various location and times throughout the year. Completion of this course DOES NOT guarantee you employment with VCU Recreational Sports, but provides you with an opportunity to apply for employment with us as a group fitness instructor. If you are hired on a trial basis, you will have six months to obtain ACE certification to continue employment.
